Booking choice: Zoo entry with the Captain Cook ferry. Book this Details
Taronga sits on a headland on the north shore of Sydney Harbour. The ferry from Circular Quay is the classic way in, and it is also the quickest. Two kinds of boat make the trip: the public F2 ferry, which you pay for with Opal, and private operators that sell the crossing bundled with your zoo ticket.
The catch is the landing. The wharf sits at the bottom of the zoo and the Main Entrance at the top, and the Sky Safari cable car that used to link them is out of action until late 2027. Plan the climb before you plan the boat.
The quick answer
The ferry is not free. The public F2 leaves Circular Quay Wharf 4 about every 30 minutes and you tap on with Opal or a contactless card. Combo tickets use Captain Cook or Fantasea boats from Wharf 6 (Fantasea also from Darling Harbour). Every boat lands by the Lower Entrance; bus 238 climbs to the Main Entrance, and a free shuttle runs only in NSW school holidays.

Is the ferry to Taronga Zoo free?
No. The public ferry is a normal Opal fare, and the private boats are either sold separately or bundled into a combo ticket.
Your zoo ticket does not cover the crossing unless you bought a combo. On the public F2 you pay as you go:
- Tap on and off with an Opal card, a credit or debit card, or a linked phone or watch (Transport for NSW).
- Children and concession holders pay a reduced fare with the right Opal card.
- Daily caps limit what you spend in a day, and the cap is lower from Friday to Sunday and on public holidays.
If you already ride Sydney's trains and buses with a card, the F2 fits into the same daily cap. That is the cheapest way to cross.
Which wharf does the Taronga Zoo ferry leave from?
The public F2 leaves from Circular Quay Wharf 4. Captain Cook and Fantasea combo boats leave from Wharf 6; Fantasea also sails from Darling Harbour.
Taronga's getting here page says ferries leave Circular Quay Wharf 4 and names Captain Cook Cruises and Fantasea as operators. The operators' own pages put their boats at Wharf 6, so go by the wharf on your ticket.
| Ferry | Wharf | Ticket | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public F2 (Transdev Sydney Ferries) | Circular Quay Wharf 4 | Opal or contactless card | Taronga says every 30 minutes |
| Captain Cook Cruises | Circular Quay Wharf 6 | Ferry only, or the entry + ferry combo | Up to 10 departures a day; also stops at King Street Wharf, Darling Harbour |
| Fantasea | Circular Quay Wharf 6 or Darling Harbour Pier 26 | Entry + Fantasea ferry | Check the Fantasea timetable before you go |
Wharf 4 and Wharf 6 are a short walk apart along the Circular Quay promenade, right by the train station.

Skip the Opal maths: zoo entry and a return Captain Cook ferry from Wharf 6 in one booking.
Book thisHow long is the ferry to Taronga Zoo and how often does it run?
About 12 minutes from Circular Quay. Taronga says ferries leave every 30 minutes; Captain Cook runs up to 10 departures a day.
The crossing time comes from Taronga's visitor information. Add the wait at the wharf and the walk up from the landing, and allow 30 to 45 minutes from Circular Quay to your first animal.
- First boats: the Captain Cook combo listing gives the first ferry at about 9am. The zoo opens at 9:30am.
- Last boats: check the return timetable before you leave the wharf, and save it on your phone.
- Public holidays: Captain Cook's Taronga ferry does not run on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or Australia Day. Check the public F2 on the Transport for NSW app.
- Some F2 trips continue on to Mosman Bay, so read the destination board before you board.
Is a Taronga Zoo ferry combo worth it?
It is worth it for convenience: one booking, one queue and a set boat. On price, a plain ticket plus the public F2 on Opal usually works out cheaper.
Both routes land at the same wharf and enter the same zoo. What differs is how you pay and where you start.
| Plain ticket + public F2 | Combo ticket | |
|---|---|---|
| Boat | Public F2 from Wharf 4 | Captain Cook or Fantasea from Wharf 6 |
| Paying | Zoo ticket online, ferry by tapping on | One booking covers both |
| Flexibility | Any F2 sailing, any time | The operator's timetable |
| From Darling Harbour | Change at Circular Quay | Fantasea sails direct from Pier 26 |
| Cancellation | Depends on where you bought the zoo ticket | Free up to 24 hours before on our listed combos |
| Bus up the hill | Extra | Extra |
Our view: Opal users and anyone already tapping on all day should take the F2. Visitors staying near Darling Harbour, or who want the day sorted in one click, should take a combo.
Does the ferry drop you at the Lower or Main Entrance?
The Lower Entrance. It is a 3-minute walk from the wharf, at the bottom of a steep 28-hectare hillside.
Taronga's getting here page confirms the Lower Zoo Entrance is three minutes from the wharf. From there the zoo climbs. The visitor information calls the grounds 28 hectares of hilly terrain and warns that some areas are steep.
For 35 years the Sky Safari cable car carried visitors from the wharf to the top. It retired in 2023, and Taronga lists its replacement as coming late 2027. Until then you either walk up through the zoo or take a bus to the top and walk down. The full story is in our Sky Safari post.

How do you get from the Taronga ferry wharf to the Main Entrance?
Take bus 238 from the wharf to the Main Entrance, or walk up through the zoo. A free shuttle runs only during NSW school holidays.
- Bus 238 runs from Balmoral Beach to the zoo and the ferry wharf via the Main Entrance. It is a normal public bus: tap on with your Opal or card. Check its timetable on the Transport for NSW app.
- Free shuttle: during NSW school holidays a shuttle runs between the wharf and the Main Entrance, free with a zoo ticket and wheelchair accessible. In the winter 2026 holidays it ran from 4 to 19 July, 9:15am to 3:30pm (Taronga). Outside the holidays, there is no free shuttle.
- Walking: enter at the Lower Entrance and work uphill. Fine for fit adults; hard with a pram or small children by the afternoon.
Our pick: ride the 238 to the top, then walk downhill all day and finish at the Lower Entrance, a few minutes from the ferry home.
The zoo's own day ticket: use it at the Main or Lower Entrance, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Book thisCan you get to Taronga Zoo by bus or car?
Yes. Bus 100 runs from the QVB in the city to the zoo every 10 to 20 minutes. Drivers enter from Bradleys Head Road, where there is on-site parking.
The bus suits a rainy day or anyone staying in the city centre away from the Quay. Route 100 is a loop between City QVB and Taronga Zoo (Transport for NSW). Taronga gives a frequency of every 10 to 20 minutes. Check where it stops in the Transport for NSW app before you ride.
Driving: the car park is on site, off Bradleys Head Road, with a 2.1 metre height limit. Parking is free if you enter and leave within 90 minutes before 4pm, which suits a drop-off. Zoo Friends members pay half price for parking. A train to Circular Quay and the ferry beats the car for most visitors.

Can you walk from Taronga Zoo to Bradleys Head?
Yes, it is a 4 km track from the zoo wharf to Chowder Bay. Part of the foreshore path near the wharf is closed for Sky Safari works.
NSW National Parks describes the Bradleys Head to Chowder Bay walk as 4 km one way, 1.5 to 2.5 hours, starting at Taronga Zoo Wharf. It passes the Bradleys Head amphitheatre with a view of the Opera House and the Bridge. Local reports say the foreshore stretch between Whiting Beach and the zoo wharf closed in May 2026 for the cable car works, possibly until late 2027, so check the National Parks alerts before you set out.
For a slower look at the harbour than the 12-minute crossing, the one-hour harbour sightseeing cruise passes Bradleys Head and the zoo shoreline with live commentary.

On the public F2 from Wharf 4, yes: tap on and off with Opal, a bank card or a linked phone. Private Captain Cook and Fantasea boats need their own ticket or a combo.
