Booking choice: The Taronga Zoo entry ticket. Book this Details
Taronga's own visitor page puts a visit at about three hours. That covers the animals. It does not cover the ferry, the walk up a steep hill, two shows at set times, a sit-down lunch or the queue for a koala encounter.
Allow four to five hours inside, plus about an hour of travel from Circular Quay and back. Below: the route, the timetable and the hours that matter.
The quick answer
Plan four to five hours inside the zoo and arrive near the 9:30am opening. Start at the Main Entrance at the top (bus 238 from the wharf) and walk downhill to the ferry. Catch Seals for the Wild at 11am or 2pm and Free Flight Birds at 12pm or 3pm. The zoo closes at 5pm from September to April and 4:30pm from May to August.

How long do you need at Taronga Zoo?
About 3 hours for the highlights, by Taronga's own estimate. Four to five hours if you want both shows, a few keeper talks and lunch.
The zoo publishes several suggested routes on its planning page. Use them as a yardstick:
| Plan | Time inside | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Express Visit (Taronga) | About 3 hours | African Savannah, Rhino Reserve, Tiger Trek, Rainforest Trail, reptiles, Nura Diya Australia |
| Rainy Day Explorer (Taronga) | 2 to 3 hours | Covered viewing and indoor houses |
| Our full day | 4 to 5 hours | Every main area, one seal show, one bird show, two or three keeper talks, lunch |
| All-day Adventurer (Taronga) | Opening to closing | Every corner of the zoo |
| A tour stop | About 2 hours | What the jacaranda day tour allows: a quick loop of the highlights |
Add the ferry: 12 minutes each way, plus the wait and the walk. A day that starts at Circular Quay at 9am and ends back there at 3pm is relaxed.
What is the best route around Taronga Zoo?
Top down. Take bus 238 from the wharf to the Main Entrance, then walk downhill and leave by the Lower Entrance for the ferry.
Taronga is 28 hectares on a slope, and the visitor information warns that some areas are steep. The ferry lands at the bottom, and since the Sky Safari cable car retired in 2023 there is no free lift to the top outside school holidays. Pay for the bus. Your legs will thank you at 3pm.
From the Main Entrance, open the map in the Taronga app and plan a loop that keeps heading downhill, timed around one seal show and one bird show. Taronga's own Express Visit route covers African Savannah, Rhino Reserve, Tiger Trek, the Rainforest Trail, the reptile centre and Nura Diya Australia in about three hours. Finish at the Lower Entrance: the ferry wharf is three minutes below it.

What time are the Taronga Zoo shows and keeper talks?
Seals for the Wild at 11am and 2pm, Free Flight Birds at 12pm and 3pm. Keeper talks run from 10:40am to 2:30pm.
All of these come with your ticket. The daily times from Taronga's keeper talks page:
| Time | Show or talk |
|---|---|
| 10:40am | Rhino keeper talk, Rhino Reserve |
| 11:00am | Seals for the Wild, Seal Theatre (plus 1pm in school holidays) |
| 11:00am | Reptile keeper talk, level 2 of the reptile centre (ARC) |
| 11:30am | Meerkat keeper talk |
| 12:00pm | Free Flight Birds (weather permitting) |
| 12:00pm | Lion keeper talk |
| 12:15pm | Chimpanzee keeper talk |
| 1:00pm | Dingo keeper talk |
| 1:20pm | Giraffe keeper talk |
| 1:40pm | Capybara keeper talk |
| 2:00pm | Seals for the Wild; farmyard feed at Backyard to Bush |
| 2:15pm | Cassowary keeper talk |
| 2:20pm | Gorilla keeper talk |
| 2:30pm | Koala keeper talk |
| 3:00pm | Free Flight Birds |
On busy days Taronga advises reaching the seal and bird theatres at least 15 minutes early. Times can change, so check the app on the morning of your visit.
Every show and keeper talk in the table comes with the day ticket. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

What is the best time of day to visit Taronga Zoo?
First thing. Taronga says mornings bring smaller crowds and more active animals, and you need to arrive by 9am to book an animal encounter.
The zoo opens at 9:30am. Animal encounters are sold at the Top Plaza shop from opening, and Taronga hands out priority numbers to people waiting outside from 8:45am (animal encounters). Taronga's planning page says many animals rest in the afternoon.
Our pick: catch a ferry around 9am, be at the top by 9:30am, see Nura Diya Australia before the crowds, and plan the 11am seal show as your first sit-down. Lunch early, around 11:45am, before the food outlets fill.
When is Taronga Zoo busiest?
Expect the biggest crowds in NSW school holidays, at weekends and on public holidays. Term-time weekday mornings are the calmer choice.
School holidays change the zoo. Seals for the Wild adds a 1pm show, the penguin encounter runs, and the free shuttle from the wharf starts. Queues at the encounter desk and the shows grow too. Our summer school holidays post lists the dates and what changes.
Evening events such as the Twilight at Taronga concerts and New Year's Eve also use the grounds. Check the zoo's events page before you pick a date in summer.

Is Taronga Zoo worth visiting on a rainy day?
Yes, with a plan. Taronga's Rainy Day Explorer route uses covered viewing and indoor houses and takes about 2 to 3 hours.
The zoo's Rainy Day Explorer goes Tiger Trek (covered windows), Rhino Reserve with a hot drink, the underwater windows at the seals and penguins, Backyard to Bush, the Tasmanian devils, the reptile and amphibian centre (ARC, the largest indoor area) and Nocturnal Country. Pack a raincoat rather than an umbrella on the narrow paths.
Free Flight Birds is weather permitting, so heavy rain can cancel it. Paths on the slope get slippery: wear shoes with grip.
What time does Taronga Zoo close?
5pm from September to April and 4:30pm from May to August. It opens at 9:30am every day of the year.
Taronga's visitor information says the zoo is open 365 days a year:
| Season | Months | Open | Close |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer hours | September to April | 9:30am | 5:00pm |
| Winter hours | May to August | 9:30am | 4:30pm |
No last entry time is published. Arrive by 2pm at the latest to get real value from your ticket. Check the last ferry back before you head down the hill.
In whale season you can fill the morning on the water first: the whale cruise and zoo combo goes out past the Heads, then drops you for an afternoon at the zoo.
May to November: a whale watching cruise in the morning, then the zoo and the ferry back.
