Booking choice: The Taronga Zoo entry ticket. Book this Details
Taronga Zoo sells one kind of day ticket, general admission, in a handful of price bands: adult, child, concession, infant and three family bundles. The choices that actually change your day sit around it. Do you buy online or at the gate? Do you add a ferry? Do you pay for an animal encounter on top?
Everything below comes from Taronga's own ticket prices page, its booking site and the ferry operators' pages. We print no prices on this site, so check the live figure at checkout. The differences between the options are what matter here.
The quick answer
Buy online: Taronga labels its online individual tickets as saving 10% on the gate price, and family tickets save more. Children under 4 go free and a general admission ticket stays valid for 12 months. Keeper talks and both shows are included. The ferry, the Wildlife Express train, animal encounters and Wild Ropes are not.

What types of Taronga Zoo tickets are there?
Adult, child (4 to 15), concession and infant (under 4, free), plus three family tickets. Groups of 12 or more get a group rate.
Every ticket is the same general admission. The band only changes who it is for. Taronga lists these on its ticket prices page:
| Ticket | Who it is for | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | Ages 16 and over | The standard ticket |
| Child | Ages 4 to 15 | The GetYourGuide ticket does not allow unaccompanied minors |
| Infant | Under 4 | Free |
| Concession | Holders of a Pensioner Concession Card, Companion Card, Health Card, Seniors Card or Student Card | Show the original card at the gate, one person per card, no photocopies |
| Family | 2 adults + 2 children, 2 adults + 1 child, or 1 adult + 2 children | Extra adults or children can be added to a family ticket |
| Group | 12 people or more | Book at least 24 hours ahead with the zoo |
Family tickets are where the biggest online saving sits. A family of four has no reason to buy four single tickets at the gate.
Is it cheaper to buy Taronga Zoo tickets online?
Yes. The official booking site labels individual tickets "save 10%" and family tickets "save 20%" against the gate.
The official booking site shows the online saving next to each ticket and charges no card fee for Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Diners or UnionPay. Our own sums against the published gate prices give about 10% off for single tickets and a little over 10% off for families; the 20% label is likely measured against buying the same people individual tickets.
The Taronga Zoo ticket on GetYourGuide is the zoo's own general admission, sold with free cancellation up to 24 hours before and a reserve-now, pay-later option. Compare the two at checkout and pick whichever suits you. Both beat the gate.

Book thisCan you buy Taronga Zoo tickets at the gate?
Yes. Tickets can be paid by card at the admissions desk on arrival. You pay the higher gate price and may queue.
The booking site says it plainly: tickets can also be paid for by card at the admissions desk. No official page makes pre-booking compulsory for general admission. The zoo is cashless, so bring a card or phone. If you only carry cash, a vending machine at the zoo sells pre-paid Visa cards (visitor information).
Book ahead anyway if any of these apply:
- It is your birthday. The birthday offer has to be booked online before you go.
- NSW school holidays. The busiest weeks of the year; a ticket in hand skips one queue.
- You want a ferry combo. These are sold by the ferry operators and resellers, not at the zoo gate.
Online general admission tickets are valid for 12 months from purchase, so a dated booking does not lock you in. Tickets bought with a promo code are the exception: they stay inside the promotion's dates.
What is included in a Taronga Zoo ticket?
Entry for the day, every keeper talk and both big shows: Seals for the Wild and Free Flight Birds. Rides, encounters and the ferry cost extra.
Taronga lists the shows and talks as free with your Zoo ticket, with more than 13 talks a day. The extras are where the bill grows:
| Included with entry | Costs extra |
|---|---|
| Seals for the Wild show (11am and 2pm) | The ferry from Circular Quay |
| Free Flight Birds show (12pm and 3pm, weather permitting) | Bus 238 from the wharf up to the Main Entrance |
| Daily keeper talks: rhino, lion, giraffe, koala, gorilla and more | Wildlife Express train inside the zoo (each way) |
| Every habitat and trail, from Nura Diya Australia to Tiger Trek | Animal encounters, such as the Koala Encounter |
| Free WiFi and the zoo app | Wild Ropes high ropes course |
| Picnic areas and water refill stations | Parking, food and drink |
The show and talk times are in our guide to timing your visit.

Do Taronga Zoo tickets include the ferry?
A plain ticket does not. Combo tickets bundle zoo entry with a return ferry run by Captain Cook Cruises or Fantasea.
The public F2 ferry from Circular Quay Wharf 4 is a separate fare, paid by tapping on with an Opal card or a contactless bank card. The combos replace that with a private operator's boat from Wharf 6. Here is how the packages differ:
| Option | Ferry | Leaves from | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zoo entry ticket | Not included: public F2 on Opal | Circular Quay Wharf 4 | Flexible plans, Opal users |
| Entry + Captain Cook ferry | Return Captain Cook ferry | Circular Quay Wharf 6 | One booking for the whole day |
| Entry + Fantasea ferry | Return Fantasea ferry | Wharf 6 or Darling Harbour Pier 26 | Hotels near Darling Harbour |
| Whale cruise + zoo | Whale cruise, then the zoo ferry | Circular Quay Wharf 6 | May to November visitors |
| Go City Essentials Pass | Not included | Any | Taronga plus two more sights |
None of these include the bus up the hill. The ferry lands at the bottom of the zoo, by the Lower Entrance. The ferry guide covers wharves, times and the climb.
How does the Taronga Zoo birthday ticket work?
On your actual birthday, the birthday guest gets in for a token amount. Book the birthday ticket online before you go and bring ID.
The birthday offer works at both Taronga Zoo Sydney and Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo. The rules Taronga publishes are short:
- Book the birthday ticket online in advance. Taronga says "be sure to book ahead".
- Visit on your actual birthday, not the weekend after.
- Bring the ticket, printed or on your phone, and a form of ID.
- Family and friends get 10% off their own tickets when booked online in advance.
The full terms, such as which ID counts and any age limits, did not show on the page when we checked. Read them at checkout.

Is a Taronga Zoo membership worth it?
If you will visit three or more times in a year, probably. Zoo Friends membership gives a year of unlimited visits to Taronga Sydney and Dubbo.
The Zoo Friends membership is mainly for Sydney residents. It runs for 12 months with no auto-renewal and adds:
- Unlimited entry to both Taronga zoos (you register each visit online, and bookings may be capped).
- Half-price parking at the Sydney zoo.
- 15% off in the shops and 10% off food and drink.
- Free rides on the Wildlife Express train.
- Reciprocal entry at partner zoos in Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and more, for members with a NSW address only.
Membership prices differ between Taronga's own pages, so check the join page itself. For a single visit on holiday, it makes no sense.
How can you get cheap Taronga Zoo tickets?
Book online, use a family ticket if it fits, go on your birthday, and pair Taronga with other sights on a pass only if you will use them.
- Book online. About 10% off single tickets, more on family tickets, and no card fee on the official site.
- Count your children. Under 4s are free. A family ticket usually beats separate tickets for two adults and their kids.
- Bring your concession card. The original, not a photo of it.
- Use Opal on the ferry. The public F2 fare caps daily, and the daily cap is lower from Friday to Sunday and on public holidays (Transport for NSW fares).
- Bundle smartly. The Go City Sydney Essentials Pass covers Taronga and two more of eight attractions within 30 days. It saves money only if you wanted those other two.
- Skip what you won't use. The train, the encounters and the ropes course are all optional.
General admission for the day, with every keeper talk and both shows. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
