Taronga in the summer school holidays

The NSW summer break is the busiest stretch of Taronga's year. It also brings extras you cannot get in term time. Here are the dates, what changes at the zoo, and how to beat the queues.

NSW public schools break up for summer on Friday 18 December 2026. For Sydney families the holidays run until late January 2027, and the zoo changes gear: an extra seal show, a free shuttle up the hill, a penguin encounter that runs only in school holidays, and a ticketed New Year's Eve party on the lawns.

Below are the official dates, the holiday extras we could confirm, and the ones still waiting on Taronga's summer details.

The quick answer

In Sydney (the Eastern division), the summer school holidays run from Friday 18 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027, and students go back on Wednesday 3 February. Taronga adds a 1pm seal show and a 2pm Penguin Encounter in school holidays, and the free wharf shuttle ran all through last summer. Arrive by 9am, book online ahead, and see the animals before the afternoon heat.

When are the NSW summer school holidays in 2026-27?

Eastern division: Friday 18 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027. Western division: to Wednesday 3 February 2027.

The dates come from the NSW Department of Education 2027 calendar. Sydney is in the Eastern division. Students there return on Wednesday 3 February 2027, after staff development days, so many children are home until 2 February. Western division schools start a week later. A few schools near the state borders use different dates, and non-government schools can set their own, so check with the school.

Visiting from overseas or interstate? Our guess for the busiest days: around Boxing Day, the week after New Year and the Australia Day long weekend.

What changes at Taronga Zoo during the school holidays?

An extra 1pm seal show, a daily 2pm Penguin Encounter, the free shuttle from the wharf, and a day program for children aged 5 to 11.

Seals for the Wild normally runs at 11am and 2pm. The keeper talk page adds a third show at 1pm in school holidays. Free Flight Birds stays at 12pm and 3pm. Summer hours are 9:30am to 5pm.

The Penguin Encounter runs at 2pm daily in NSW school holidays only: you sit on the exhibit floor for up to 20 minutes. It is for ages 8 and up, with under-17s accompanied by a paying adult, and it sells from 9am on the day at the Top Plaza retail shop. The Zoo Adventures holiday program takes children aged 5 to 11 on weekdays, 8:30am to 3:15pm. Registrations for the summer holidays open in mid-November.

Does the free shuttle run in the summer holidays?

It did last summer, every day of the holidays. The 2026-27 dates were not yet on Taronga's page, so check before you travel.

Last summer the shuttle ran from Saturday 20 December 2025 to Sunday 1 February 2026, 9:15am to 4pm daily, timed with the ferries. It runs between the ferry wharf and the Main Entrance along Bradleys Head Road, is free with a zoo ticket, and takes up to four wheelchairs; prams should be folded where possible. The current getting-here page still shows the winter dates only.

Outside school holidays, the climb from the wharf means bus 238 or walking up through the zoo. The cable car is gone until late 2027: our Sky Safari post explains why.

Is Taronga Zoo open on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve?

The zoo says it opens every day of the year. Private ferry combos may not run on Christmas Day, and New Year's Eve has a separate ticketed event.

Taronga states it is open 365 days a year. The ferry is the catch. Captain Cook Cruises, which runs the ferry and zoo combo, says its Taronga ferry is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Australia Day. On those days, use the public F2 from Wharf 4 and check its holiday timetable.

On 31 December the zoo hosts New Year's Eve at Taronga Zoo, a ticketed harbour party with views of the fireworks. Tiers range from picnic spots on the Concert Lawns to adults-only terraces in the Taronga Centre, and several tiers already show as sold out. Guests enter via Prince Albert Street and Whiting Beach Road. A day ticket does not get you in, and Taronga has not published day hours for 31 December, so check before planning a daytime visit.

How do you beat the crowds at Taronga in the summer holidays?

Arrive at opening, book online, start at the top, and see the shows early in the day.

Taronga's own advice is to come early, when crowds are thinner and animals are more active. Some sleep in the afternoon. If you want an encounter, "arriving by 9am is essential": they sell first-in from the Top Plaza retail shop when the gates open, and the queue order is set from 8:45am. On busy days, reach the seal and bird theatres at least 15 minutes before the show.

Book online. Taronga's site labels online tickets about 10% cheaper than the gate, and general admission tickets stay valid for 12 months from purchase, so a rainy day does not waste them. Take a hat, sunscreen and a refillable bottle; there are water stations around the zoo. Our packing guide has the full list.
